About the Columbia Missourian
The Columbia Missourian is a city newspaper primarily run by students in the journalism program at the University of Missouri and staffed with full-time editors with real newsroom experience. I served as a designer for the paper in the fall of 2011 working on A1 and B1 pages on a weekly basis. The process was somewhat difficult for me in the beginning, but in the end, I really began to enjoy the challenge of being creative within such a deadline-driven atmosphere. I have now come to truly appreciate newspaper design and love following work that pushes the limits of what readers expect.
About VOX Magazine
VOX Magazine is a weekly publication serving Columbia, Missouri with a population of roughly 100,000 people. It’s also run by the Missouri School of Journalism and is included free with subscriptions of the Columbia Missourian newspaper.
There are a lot of passionate people making the wheel turn at VOX Magazine and lots of room for creativity and growth. As a designer, I think it will be difficult to find the same kind of opportunities and freedom anywhere else. The magazine consistently receives recognition for its layout and designs including the ‘Best Overall Design of a Magazine’ from the Student Society for News Design contest in the spring of 2012 when I was working there designing department pages and covers. In the summer of 2012, I served as the co-art director of the publication, in charge of designing every issue of VOX.
“Macon: The People and Stories of Missouri’s City of Maples”
I edited the book, "Macon: The People and Stories of Missouri's City of Maples," for the photojournalism department at the University of Missouri and in partial completion of my master’s degree. “Macon” is a collection of photo stories from the 62nd annual Missouri Photo Workshop, and is the third book in a series made possible by the Missouri School of Journalism. In addition to editing each photo story, copy editing, fact checking and writing the introduction and afterword for this book, I also designed the layout. While I tried to stick to layouts similar to the previous books in the series, I custom designed each individual story based on overall story development. I also toned every image and worked with the printers to perfect the final product.
